Where the fortress sits above Prizren

The Fortress of Prizren occupies a rocky rise above the old town, overlooking the Bistrica River. Its position makes it easy to connect a visit with a walk through the historic centre, including the route described in this one-day itinerary for Prizren’s historic centre.

The fortress is divided into three parts: the upper city, the lower city and the southern city. Archaeological excavations documented deposits from the Late Bronze Age, Late Antiquity and successive medieval periods.

Excavations took place in 1969, then again in 2004 and from 2009 to 2012. The Kosovo Council for Cultural Heritage placed the site under permanent protection in 2016.

Marked walking paths climb to the fortress from Shadervan Square and the Marash neighbourhood, with the uphill walk estimated at around 10–15 minutes. The climb is short, but the fortress website recommends comfortable footwear.

A second approach starts at Arasta Bridge: follow the signs and the road leading uphill. The Sharr Mountain tourism site estimates this walk at 10 minutes. If you’re planning to walk between several central sights, how to get around Prizren covers walking, taxis and local transport.

What can you see at the fortress?

The fortress has high walls, towers and gates, with traces of buildings inside, especially from the Ottoman period. It served as a military garrison during Ottoman rule, and Ottoman additions included a hammam, a mosque and other military and utilitarian buildings.

Look across the city from the fortress’s elevated position, then take time to notice the remains within its walls. The old town below offers further context for the site’s place in Prizren’s history, including at the Prizren League Complex.

Combining the fortress with the old town

The uphill walk fits naturally into time spent in the historic centre: start among the old-town streets, take one of the marked paths to the fortress, then return to explore the riverside and central landmarks. The view from above also helps place the fortress in relation to the city below.
